According
to the dictionary a proverb is defined as a concrete
and short saying, which is often repeated. These statements
usually express a truth of some kind that maybe philosophical,
spiritual or then practical. The word proverb is said
to originate from the Latin word proverbium, meaning
concrete statement.
Proverbs
can be classified into various types such as the metaphorical,
maxim or aphorism. Many writers make use of a proverb
to enhance their work, or then simply to concretize
what they wish to say.
In
fact, in most cultures of the world, one of the important
aspects of their literature are the maxims and aphorisms
that are valuable lessons, and yet poetic to the ear
and heart. Apart from the common proverbs that are known
around the world, the ones regarded for their high-teaching
value are the Japanese proverbs. They were generally
penned or spoken by the spiritual masters and teachers
and formed a apart of the learning inheritance.
Irish
proverbs are practical and fun to read. They do tend
to tilt towards harsher and more sarcastic tones, sometimes
at the cost of deriding some neighboring cultures. On
the other hand the Arabic proverbs, are generally in
the form of couplets that are poetic and spiritual in
nature. Italian proverbs are regarded as romantic and
crisp, and mainly based on voyages and discoveries,
with deeper connotations with regards to life.
Most
eloquent writers and speakers maintain a readymade list
of proverbs, which maybe noted in a diary or then simply
memorized. Even students are advised to learn as many
as they can and quote them in texts and speeches.
